A framed note, on stationary from the desk of Mrs. William Smoller, and dated in 1953 states, “Dear Son, There is no card available that would express our wishes for your future and success, in your business undertaking, hence this note. Always remember that your mother and dad are forever with you in all your endeavors. Best of luck. Love, Mom and Dad” And so it began…..their son, Seymour “Cy” Smoller opened Smoller Insurance on Atlantic Avenue, across from the South Station railroad station in Boston, MA. Cy was able to combine his excellent people and sales skills along with his contacts at the New Haven Railroad Credit Union (located across the street), to build his thriving agency. Through years of involvement in the Newton community, Temple Reyim, Camp Bauercrest, Jewish Community Center, Wollaston and Metro Credit Unions, and the Winthrop Rotary Club, everyone began to know and depend on Cy, as well as his trademark “cigar and a kibbitz.” By 1975, tiring of the “shlep” into Boston each day, Cy moved the agency to its current location on Rte 9 in Newton. This made it an easier commute from his Newton home and more accessible to his family, friends, and his beloved Jewish Community Center, now also in Newton. Until 1988, Cy ran the agency (and juggled seats on several Boards) as a one-man shop. In 1988, after many years of exclusively selling life insurance, Cy’s son Mark joined the agency. The move was in recognition of Cy’s declining health and need of work support, as well as Mark’s growing family and his need to be at home more in the evenings. This also enabled Mark to “account round” his life insurance clients with home and auto insurance. For the next 10 years Cy and Mark worked side by side, overseeing the agency’s growth as well as a shared dedication to family and community engagement & volunteerism. Sadly, in November of 1998, Cy passed after a brave 25-year battle with heart disease. For the next 10 years his son Mark continued to grow Smoller Insurance on his own, with Cy’s life lessons and the guiding principles of “What would dad do?” leading him on. By 2008, Mark’s son Billy decided to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and give the insurance business a try. 16 months into banking, Billy had learned many things, most importantly, that banking was not for him. It was too regimented, and Billy need more freedom and flexibility to follow the life lessons from his father and grandfather, prioritize family, community engagement & volunteerism. Billy most definitely inherited the “schmooze” gene from dad and papa. This, coupled with his willingness to delve into technology and think outside the box, gave Smoller Insurance Agency fresh energy to continue to grow. With that growth came the need to hire more team members and the first employees the agency has ever had, not named Smoller, joined in 2020. Today, Smoller Insurance Agency has access to a growing number of carriers allowing us to place any risk, regardless of how difficult, while continuing to provide the type of individual service that Cy preached and built the practice on dating back to 1953.
